SURVIVING CIVILIZATION’S COLLAPSE

Some civilizations survived collapse for long periods, others only a short time. Why the difference? Long-surviving civilizations had wise governance that controlled population numbers. Today we have two additional problems: we must increase equality in wealth, and mitigate the climate crisis. We need wiser governance to resolve all three problems.

I’m Philip

I was born in Victoria. I obtained my B.Sc. and M.Sc. in biological sciences at U.B.C. in 1959 and 1961, respectively. I obtained my Ph.D. in animal behaviour from the University of Leiden, the Netherlands, in 1965. My working career was with Fisheries and Oceans in St Andrews, N.B. and Nanaimo B.C., then with the International Commission for Conservation of Atlantic Tunas in Madrid, Spain, briefly with Dobrocky Seatech, Saanich, and finally as a consulting editor for the Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences.

Before and since retiring I have been interested in social justice and humanity’s future (e.g., Limits to GrowthBeyond the Limits, etc.) and self-published a small book in 2019: Surviving Civilization’s Collapse. When working with others my attention was attracted to the potential and power of Citizens’ Assemblies for creating wiser governance.
